The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greene County/ Schneider House of Hope, (Interfaith) a homeless shelter in Xenia supporting the entire Greene County region, will be hosting a huge fundraiser “Empty Bowl” on October 7, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Faith Community United Methodist Church located at 100 Country Club Drive, Xenia, Ohio.
“We run strictly on donations and fundraisers,” Interfaith board of director, Gail Simpson said. “It may be hard to believe, but there’re homeless people among us in Greene County. They’re homeless for countless of reasons. Often because they have low paying or part-time jobs with no benefits, unreliable transportation, childcare issues and sometimes they just don’t understand the social services system .”
In 2015, the homeless shelter housed over 140 people, with 60 of those being children under the age of six. The shelter provides them with meals, basic necessities, and a stable environment. They also provide their residents with classes in financing, child development and parenting, life skills, personal development, tutoring for both children and adults. They also direct those that need it to GED classes. Case managers are on-hand to help with forms and applications for housing, healthcare, childcare, job hunting and provides skills and strategies to help improve their lives and current situation.
The Empty Bowl fundraiser will offer a soup dinner and silent action.
