Keeping Summer Alive

Since the summer is winding down, I’ve just been trying to hold onto the most of summer as I can. One of my favorite things of summer is fireflies. It brings me back to my childhood and reminds me to show my grandchildren how to enjoy the same.

When my sisters and I were younger, my mom would give us one glass jar with a lid with holes – could have been a used spaghetti sauce jar or a cleaned out sauerkraut jar- and we would go to town trying to get catch the most fireflies and get them into the jar. I can still remember the smell of them in the small confines- the smell of pure earth.

At night, we were allowed to put them in our room, turn off the lights and watch their glow. It was the best part of summer and we captured them as much as we could. We would watch them for hours and cry when they died.

No matter how old I get, it’s still the best part of my summer.

Keeping the tradition going for years to come.
